why did i choose to study food engineering?
Hello everyone, today I will tell you why I am studying food engineering.
Well, when I was a child I wanted to be a scientist. I don't remember what my vision of the "adult" world was like. My dad is a beekeeper, so he works in the backyard and I could accompany him in practically all his chores. I probably wanted to be a beekeeper at one point, because I had my costume made and everything, but as I got older I developed a sort of aversion to bees and wasps.
At 17, I had no idea what to study. I was doing well in school and all my teachers assumed I would go into medicine. But if one thing was clear to me, it was that health care and careers involving working with the sick were not my thing. So, somehow I convinced myself that I wanted to be a geologist... that's how I entered Beauchef (Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics). That year I had a horrible time, I didn't like any subject (except chemistry), I hated programming, my tastes were so different from my classmates, and among so many other things, I finally realized that it wasn't my place.
My dad was the one who showed me the Food Engineering curriculum. I have always been a person interested in the things I eat, the kind of person who goes to the supermarket and reads labels and compares products (yes, my boyfriend likes to go with me), and this is something my dad instilled in me since I was a child; to pay attention to preservatives and additives to avoid potentially harmful foods.
I didn't know the career, so I was researching, finding out about the job field and the skills I would be able to exercise as a professional. And I fell in love. I don't even remember what I filled out my application with, first of all, there was Food Engineering at the Universidad de Chile and that was it. To this day I think that if this career had not existed I don't know where or what I would be doing with my life.
As for my experience, as I mentioned in the previous post, they have been the best years. Obviously they have been hard, exhausting and with constant challenges. In every area and adding what it means to move out on your own and become an adult from one day to the next.
But in spite of everything, I have enjoyed it so much. So many laughs and good times, so many great people I have met. I feel very lucky to have chosen Food Engineering at this University.
