My Favorite piece of technology

One of my favorite objects is the bicycle!

Well, I think we all know what a bicycle is, so instead of describing it I will tell you that it was invented by a German called Karl Drais, in the year 1817 approximately, and he called it "walking machine".

My first bicycle was given to me when I was four years old, it was pink and obviously had wheels. I don't remember at what age I learned to use the bike without help, but what I do remember is that my dad welded an iron on the back of the bike, and that's how he held me up.

During my school years, the bicycle was my faithful companion; it was my means of transportation (I live far away, so walking was not an option). Then I went to Santiago and I couldn't take my bike with me; I missed it a lot. To be honest, I was afraid of the idea of pedaling around Santiago. I still consider it super dangerous. Anyway, I managed to buy a bike in October 2019, during the outbreak. At that time it was essential as a means of transportation (there were no buses and the subways were closed). I liked to go to the fair and to the marches by bike, and with my boyfriend we used to ride at least once a week.

So it is a technology that I use quite often, now in times of pandemic I consider it is the safest. And since I'm in the field, I've taken advantage of every opportunity to use it.

Why do I like it?

I like cycling because it is the most social, ecological and sustainable form of mobility. It is not only a means of transportation that allows you to be the master of your own time, but it is also beneficial for your health; it reduces stress levels, strengthens legs and lower back. Great, isn't it?

What would life be like without bicycles?

It would probably be even more sedentary and the planet more polluted. It is important to see the bicycle as a clean and sustainable means of transportation that contributes to the conservation of the environment, as it does not produce toxic gases, and takes up less space.

So it is something that I recommend to everyone, it is healthy and fun. And even better when we do it with friends.

Thanks for reading!
