How can my major make the world a better place

One of the reasons why I like my career is because I believe that the role of the food engineer is increasingly important. Especially in this world where there are more and more of us, and fewer and fewer resources available.

But how could a food engineer affect the world?

Well, one of the reasons I love my career is because I firmly believe that it provides the tools necessary to make great contributions and changes. We live in a world where the population is increasing and resources are decreasing, and while the "way" we feed ourselves changes over the years, we will never stop needing food. I guess this is why it is known as "the career of the future".

Professionals in this area seek (among many other things) to develop more environmentally friendly processes to save energy and water, and to take care of renewable resources that lead to integral and sustainable human development. For this reason, there is a continuous search for new techniques and technologies for food preservation, processing and storage. And considering how destroyed our planet is, I believe that this is a fundamental contribution and a way to positively affect the world. I would like to add that food engineers not only design new products, but also incorporate other nutrients (antioxidants, minerals, prebiotics, probiotics, etc.) that contribute in an extra way to health, constituting the so-called functional foods.

Another thing that I believe can have a great impact is the contribution of the innovations and research of these professionals to the nutrition of people allergic and intolerant to certain foods. Such is the case of celiacs, people who cannot consume gluten, and who, due to the great cross-contamination in the industries, have few food alternatives in Chilean commerce today.

The truth is, I still don't know what area to focus on. I really like innovation, the cereals area and the packaging area. But I still have a few more courses to take and maybe I will discover my passion hahaha. Anyway, I want to innovate and make changes in favor of intolerant or allergic people; my father is celiac and that is a driving force in this whole process, because I have experienced firsthand how complicated it is for them something as basic as feeding themselves. I want the day to come when they can eat a safe, tasty and nutritional food. without it costing an arm and a leg. I wish more people could see how wonderful this career is... and sorry for going on so long, I still feel like I could say a thousand more things haha. Thanks for reading!
